Compatible software for making a directory

Our church is looking at taking our Rock data and photos and creating a church directory.  I have a couple of questions if anyone else has tried this:

* What software did you use to create your directory?  

* Did you do an online directory or print only?

* I see a photo opt-out feature but is there another way to capture an opt out of the directory altogether?

    I'd love to hear the route you went with Excel/Outlook.

      Hey Jenny,


      The route was basically creating a report, exporting to Excel, using some formulas to make it importable as a .csv, importing the .csv file into Outlook as contacts, and then printing the contacts (there's a template in there that suits our needs well).


      If you want to know more then I can provide you with the documentation we have for exporting and formatting. The Outlook side of things I didn't bother to document because that hadn't changed much.


      If you're in no rush to produce a directory then I'd hold fire till 4.0.

      Hi Jenny.  Haven't done a directory, but you can use extended attributes to capture an opt out of the directory altogether.

      Hey Jenny,

      If you want a physically printed directory then I can share with you the route we've gone down (requires you to be comfortable with Excel) using Outlook. The good news is in the next version 4.0 there'll be features to merge documents to Word which makes the process a whole lot easier.

      In terms of an online directory I'm not sure if there's anything out there at the moment with that functionality, I reckon you'd need a custom block for that.

      Directory TEST.docx

      Save this file and upload it to your Rock as a "Merge Template" and then merge the Report or DataView you want to display in the directory. Be sure to click "Combine Family Members" to print the directory by family.

      I have not figured out a way to add photos yet, but I'm working on it. Otherwise, this is a relatively simple way to print families in a directory format for whatever groups you want.

      There is now a Directory function in Rock.

      Best place to learn is in the latest "Person & Family Field Manual" where there is a chapter called "Directory" just after the chapter "Editing a Family".  Note that you have to access Block Settings to turn on Show All People, etc.
